The Carlton football club have continued their winning ways with a tough, hard fought match played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon. In trying, windy conditions, the Blues outmuscled and outplayed the more fancied Sydney Swans to win a well deserved victory by 7 points. The win was all the more satisfying after the Blues won a thriller last week on the long road trip to Perth beating Fremantle and on Saturday the home team in Sydney suffered a similar fate. The workload for the Blues was shared around, with Levi Casboult, Matthew Kreuzer, Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy, Jack Silvagni & Ed Curnow the standouts. Sydney had too many players that were inconsistent in their efforts and struggled against the continual pressure Carlton applied. Luke Parker (23 disposals, 1 goal) \u00a0was best for Sydney, with Jake Lloyd (34 disposals, 1 goal) and Josh Kennedy (23 disposals, 10 tackles) also toiling hard<\/p>\n

The Blues got off to a flying start with tall forward Levi Casboult launching himself high into a crowded marking contest and took a superb contested mark and then booted the Blues first goal. The Swans countered with Luke Parker kicking Sydney\u2019s first and then Carlton quickly answered via a Sam Walsh. Jordan Dawson replied and at the first break, the scores were tied up at 17 points apiece.<\/p>\n

If one was to argue where the game was won, it was during the second term. The Blues kicked 3 opportunistic goals in and around the goal square where the Sydney defenders struggled and fumbled to clear the ball out of the danger zone. Zac Fisher, Michael GIbbons and Darcy Lang cashed in with single goals and gave Carlton a handy break. The Swans kicked a solitary goal thanks to Kieran Jack who was making a welcome return to the senior side.<\/p>\n

The second half was a pretty scrappy affair, with Carlton nullifying any Swans attempt at a comeback. In the ruck Matthew Kreuzer absolutely dominated (55 – 20 hit outs) with stand in Sydney ruckman Aliir Aliir who struggling to tap the ball to his teammates. The final term saw the Blues slam on two quicks goals via Levi Casboult and Jack Silvagni and despite some minor Swans resistance, Carlton won a superb hard fought 7 point win.<\/p>\n

Interim Carlton coach David Teague continues to chalk up wins in an impressive manner and surely like Rhys Shaw at North Melbourne, he must at least be given a chance to argue his case. Teague was delighted at his team\u2019s application in the contest \u201cIt\u2019s a balance to go in and win the ball and also if you get too many guys inside it\u2019s a bit harder. I thought the balance in the contest was really good. When we didn\u2019t win, our ability to tackle I thought we were a lot stronger\u201d.<\/p>\n

Swan coach was disappointed with the loss, but gave the Blues full credit for their effort \u201cYeah, we got well beaten around the footy, minus 21 at contested possessions. It\u2019s the number one rule in footy. You have to win the ball at the source\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sydney travel to Perth next Saturday to face the Fremantle Dockers, whilst Carlton head back home to play the Gold Coast Suns in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
