Republican candidate Scott Brown has won the seat vacated by the late Senator Ted Kennedy by defeating Democrat candidate Martha Coakley.
The special election was held due to the passing of Senator Kennedy. It was expected that the Democrats would retain the seat, yet Brown campaigned solidly on the back of growing dissent amongst voters on the way the Obama government is heading.
